Chapter Thirteen

Brenton was not one to dream. After his brothers’ dreams faded from his mind, he slept like the dead most nights. But that night, with Vivian in his arms, her soft, warm body pressed against his, Brenton dreamed.

He dreamed of the volcano where he was born; the sea of molten magma from which he emerged in dragon form. In his dream, he spread his wings, tilted his massive jaws to the sky and roared fire toward the heavens.

And he was alone.

In his dream, Brenton rose from the volcano, and took flight. His black, leathery wings carried him through the sky and up, up, up, away from the earth. When he looked down, he could still see the volcano below him, tiny from this height, spitting lava and ash.

"It's beautiful," said a voice in his ear, and he turned his head to see Vivian perched on his shoulders, her pale arms clinging tightly to his neck and her red hair aloft like fire in the sky.

You're here, he thought.

"Of course I'm here," she said, her voice dreamy. Even through his scales, he could feel her warmth. "I'll always be here, if you'll have me."

A sense of well-being rose in Brenton's chest as he flew away from the volcano. He didn't need it anymore. It wasn't his home.

"Your home is with me," said Vivian as though she read his mind, her voice ringing clearly in his ears despite the roaring wind. "My home is with you."

It was true, Brenton knew. She belonged with him. She could stay on his back and together they would cross the skies with nothing in their way. Together, they could do anything.

She was his.

"I'm yours," she whispered.

And Brenton knew he would never be alone again.

Jerking upright, Brenton looked around the room in confusion. It was dark out. Vivian was curled up next to him. The memory of her on his back was nearly a tangible thing, and Brenton held onto it with both hands and all his might.

What the hell was that? he thought, staring down at her.

"Hm?" she said, rolling over, her eyes opening sleepily.

"I'm sorry," he said, laying down and pulling her into his arms. She was so warm. So soft. He could practically feel her arms wrapped around his dragon neck. "I didn't mean to wake you up."

"I was having a good dream," she replied sleepily. "I was with you, but it was the big you. We were flying. I think there was a volcano."

He froze, his heart hammering in his chest. She was already back asleep, her breath steady and her body relaxed.

They shared a dream? What did that mean?

You know what it means, said his dragon, the part of himself that he'd been trying to ignore for so long. You've known ever since you first kissed her. There's one explanation for all this, you've just been too stubborn to see it.

Vivian was his mate.

It was impossible, wasn't it?

Think, his dragon said. Use your brain for once.

Other shifters had mates. They could, because there were more than just four of them, and they weren't all brothers.
